August is “Clear the Shelters” Month

Did you know that August is “Clear the Shelters” month?

According to the Clear the Shelters website, “NBC and Telemundo-owned stations are teaming up with hundreds of shelters across the country to host Clear the Shelters, a nationwide pet adoption drive in August 2020 that helps find loving homes for animals in need. More than 411,000 pets have found their forever homes since 2015.”

Hills’ Pet Foods is also a major supporter of Clear the Shelters.

You can support Clear the Shelters in several ways:

  • Adopt a pet
  • Foster an animal
  • Donate money or supplies
  • Volunteer at a local shelter
  • Share the “Clear the Shelters” initiative with others

The City of Tamarac spotlighted Clear the Shelters on its Facebook page, noting that “Broward County Animal Care is taking part in the 6th annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign. This special promotion runs through August and features virtual pet adoptions and donations.

Not only will adoption fees be waived, but those who adopt an adult pet weighing 40lbs or more will receive a pet wellness care voucher including vaccinations, a one-year supply of flea/tick preventative and basic dental care.”

Clear the Shelters began in northern Texas in 2014 and was originally known as “Empty the Shelters.” It has grown in size and scope every year since then.

Susan Houser, writing for Out the Front Door, explains that Clear the Shelters was founded by Corey Price in the summer of 2014. Within just two weeks, Corey had convinced over 30 local shelters to participate.

The very next year, NBC Universal decided that all of its local television stations would participate in supporting the event; this brought national exposure to the effort. By 2016, the number of participating shelters had grown to about 700 nationwide, and over 50,000 animals found new homes.

If you’re looking to adopt a pet during Clear the Shelters month, you can take a fun quiz at Hill’s to help you determine which pet might be best for you.
