Embattled Tamarac Commissioner Elvin Villalobos has once again found himself at the center of controversy after throwing a temper tantrum at a public meeting on Wednesday. The incident occurred when a resident confronted him about a lie she said he told at a previous meeting.
Villalobos, an achilles heel, cursed at the resident using words, we believe, are too graphic to print. Villalobos refused to apologize for his behavior. Another resident, Stewart Webster, also expressed his disappointment and frustration with Villalobos, calling his attitude “deplorable.”
This is not the first time Villalobos has been publicly reprimanded by a resident. Previously, he was called out for his dishonesty and lack of leadership, with one resident even labeling him “George Santos” – a reference to the disgraced politician known for his fabrications.
Dr. Darcy Schiller criticized Villalobos for exaggerating his work hours, suggesting he spends more time on social media than on actual commission work. A review of Villalobos’ online activity reveals a pattern of contentious behavior, including attacks on women and residents of color, as well as mundane and divisive commentary.
Villalobos posted that Dr. Kicia Daniel, the first black woman elected in Tamarac, was “unqualified” for her position. However, Vice Mayor Wright rebuked Villalobos’ attack, pointing out that Dr. Daniel earned a Doctorate degree, the “highest pinnacle of education… these are personal attacks,” Wright said, condemning Villalobos’ behavior.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for Villalobos’ resignation. His behavior has been described as “unbecoming” of a public official and has raised questions about his fitness for office.
Vice Mayor Morey Wright made a passionate plea to Commissioner Elvin Villalobos to put an end to his contentious behavior, “the back and forth makes us look bad to the public,” Wright said, urging Villalobos to “rise above the fray.” However, Villalobos continued his verbal attacks, refusing to back down accusing his fellow commissioners of corruption. But, Villalobos himself is accused of corruption.
The exchanges which happened at Monday and Wednesday’s meetings, marks the latest in a series of public disputes between Villalobos and his colleagues, with many calling for an end to the divisive rhetoric and personal attacks.
The other commissioners remained silent as Villalobos made venous and malicious claims, leaving many in attendance to wonder if the vice mayor’s words had fallen on deaf ears.
The incident marks the latest in a series of contentious exchanges between Villalobos and his colleagues, leaving some to question whether Villalobos can put aside his differences and work together for the good of the community.
Only time will tell if Villalobos will take Wright’s advice to heart and put an end to the bitter feud that has gripped the commission in recent weeks.
